Bubba's Rooting Interest

A year ago, Bubba Watson played at storied St. Andrews Golf Club as a tourist.

Next week, he returns as a competitor in the British Open.

His entry was solidified Sunday night, thanks to England's Justin Rose winning the AT&T National.

Rose's victory enabled Watson to secure the last remaining exemption as one of the top PGA Tour money earners in a stretch that started at The Players Championship ? also won by Rose ? and ended last weekend.

Watson, the Milton High graduate, whose emotional first PGA Tour victory two weeks ago has increased his national celebrity status, was literally sweating at a fitness center rooting for Rose to win.

"I was like his parents," said Watson, jokingly, speaking with reporters during a media interview session Wednesday at the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill. "My training went a lot longer than normal because I was focused on (Rose) winning, I needed him to win."

Prior to playing in his first British Open, Watson and his wife, Angie, along with his caddy and agent traveled early to the British Isles, stopping to play at St. Andrews.

"It's special," Watson said during Wednesday's interview. "That's what I know as the home of golf and to play St. Andrews for the Open is going to be fun."

Oh, and there might be a few British pounds wagered on Watson, too. He tops a list of "Rising Sports Stars" to watch in July, compiled by Brand Affinity Technologies. The ratings are based on media exposure, performance, awards, popularity, engagement and fan base, among others, for more than 30,000 athletes and celebrities.

Pace's Giles transfers

Ben Giles, a Pace High graduate, was among three new additions Tuesday to the University of South Alabama football roster.

Giles, a linebacker, transferred from Louisiana-Monroe, where he redshirted as a freshman last season. He retains all four years of playing eligibility with the Jaguars. He produced 89 tackles his senior season at Pace, including 14 for a loss and was a first-team PNJ All-Area selection.

Gulf Breeze's Robbins signs

Stephen Robbins, a Gulf Breeze High graduate, will play for Enterprise (Ala.) Community College next season.

The Dolphins' center fielder batted .412 last season and hit .389 during his prep career. He'll join a program directed by head coach Tim Hulsey, who completed with 25th year at the school.
